The 40th anniversary of the P.180’s first flight was celebrated at Piaggio Aerospace’s Villanova d’Albenga campus with an event dedicated to the people who have shaped the aircraft’s story over four decades. Bringing together current and former employees, the event was a tribute to the generations of engineers, technicians, test pilots, and the many teams working behind the scenes whose expertise has been fundamental to Piaggio’s success.

The celebration featured a commemorative film, interviews with former colleagues who worked on the Avanti in the early 1980s, and a panel with current employees discussing some of the defining moments of the P.180’s journey. A display of historical material from the P.180’s development offered a physical look at the work turning the design into a flying aircraft, including original drawings and wind tunnel models used during its development.

Speaking to the employees gathered at the Villanova d’Albenga campus, as well as colleagues joining via livestream, Cristian Toninelli, CEO of Piaggio Aerospace, said: “Someone else can spend hours solving a problem on a component that will eventually become invisible inside the aircraft. Another person will inspect something that looks ordinary but has to meet an extraordinary standard. Then, one day, all of those individual pieces come together as the aircraft leaves the ground. At that moment, nobody sees anything else but the aircraft flying. But that is the beauty of this work. We have the privilege of being able to point to something tangible and know that our work helped make it possible.”

From the aircraft’s innovative design and development through testing, certification, production, and continued support, P.180’s story has been shaped by people across many different disciplines. Their combined knowledge and commitment have helped the P.180 evolve while preserving the distinctive qualities that have defined it since its first flight.

Reflecting on the origins of the P.180 Avanti, Haluk Bayraktar, Chairman of Piaggio Aerospace, stated: “The P.180’s distinctive configuration came from looking at the problem differently – from asking whether there might be a better way to achieve greater efficiency, performance, and comfort. Alessandro Mazzoni had the vision, and Piaggio’s engineers had the expertise and determination to turn that vision into an aircraft built to stand the test of time. And that brings me to the real meaning of 40 years of the P.180: it is the people.”

The celebration concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony and a toast to the P.180 and the people who have been part of its journey.
